Brand Inspiration

Krotoa (also known as Eva) was a Khoi woman who was born in the late 16th century in the area that is now known as Cape Town, South Africa. She was the niece of the chief of the Goringhaiqua, a Khoi tribe that lived in the area.

Krotoa was taken into the service of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as a young girl and was raised by Jan van Riebeeck, the founder of Cape Town. She quickly learned to speak Dutch and became a valuable interpreter and negotiator between the Dutch and the Khoi people.

Krotoa was baptized in 1662 and took the Christian name Eva. She married a Danish surgeon named Pieter van Meerhoff and had three children with him. However, her marriage was not accepted by the Dutch authorities because she was considered a slave and therefore not legally allowed to marry a free man.

Despite her important role as an interpreter and mediator, Krotoa faced many challenges and discrimination during her life. She was often caught between two worlds and struggled to find her place in a society that was dominated by the Dutch colonizers.

Krotoa died in 1674 at the young age of 32. Her legacy, however, lives on as a symbol of the complex and often difficult history of South Africa. Her story is a reminder of the many injustices that were inflicted on indigenous peoples during the colonial era and the ongoing struggles for equality and justice that continue to this day.

Today, Krotoa is remembered and celebrated for her bravery, resilience, and contribution to the history of South Africa. Her legacy has been the inspiration behind Krotoa Travel and Tours. Our tours encapsulates the Western Cape, where her story began.
